Transforming Zinc Refinery Operations: Implementing an Automated Cathode Transfer System

by Bill Torrens, General Manager EPCM Automation

EPCM has recently completed a project aimed at enhancing the operations of one of North America’s largest zinc refineries through the development of an Automated Cathode Transfer System. By automating cathode handling, this initiative seeks to increase production, optimize efficiency, and improve safety. This project aligns with EPCM’s vision to help clients solve their most challenging problems.

Efficiency and Safety

The primary goal is to automate cathode handling to improve crane availability. The refinery’s existing operations are constrained by the overhead crane. By automating the cathode movement from one station to the next, the crane is no longer the limiting factor.  As a result, production and maintenance availability increases.
