Elevating Copper Refining with EPCM’s Anode Scrap Wash System

by Bill Torrens, General Manager EPCM Automation

In the mining industry, the drive for change and improvement is constant. We developed our “Anode Scrap Wash (ASW) System” in response to the request of one of our major clients in Europe. This project stands out for its innovation, incorporating cutting-edge technology to provide our clients with the results they need. The ASW system provides effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability, firmly establishing EPCM’s ASW system as the industry leader.

Anode Scrap Wash (ASW) System

This project is centered around the complete design and supply of an anode scrap wash system for the copper refining tank house of one of our key clients in Europe. This system is engineered to process scrap anodes efficiently. The machine’s function is to recover precious metals from scrap anodes using a unique design that surpasses other designs in the market.

Our responsibilities include designing, supplying, and integrating the process equipment, designing and installing internal piping, managing cable inside the cell, and developing and installing the perimeter guarding system. This comprehensive approach aims to minimize the client’s effort and risk.

Listed below are the key components of this project:

  • Receiving and Processing: The ASW System receives scrap anodes from the tank house crane.
  • Cleaning, Washing, and Anode Sludge Recovery: The multi-stage process ensures the removal of precious metals and impurities from the sludge.
  • Efficient Drying, Broken Anode Recovery, and Safety Measures: Post-wash, the scrap anodes aredried to prepare them for further processing. This step is crucial as the scrap anodes, including any broken pieces, are destined for the furnace for remelting. It’s imperative to note that wet scrap anodes placed in the furnace can provoke a dangerous reaction, posing a significant safety concern. Thorough drying, recovery and handling of the broken anodes are critical safety measures taken to minimize hazards and ensure optimal quality of the copper material.
  • Precision Stacking and Bundling: The system employs cutting-edge robotics to stack the inconsistently shaped scrap anodes into precise bundles, ready for the next phase of production.
  • Secure Packaging: Completed bundles are securely strapped for safe transport and storage.
  • Comprehensive Support Services: EPCM provides services, including initial engineering, documentation, installation support, and spare parts, ensuring a comprehensive project lifecycle. We offer an industry-leading, comprehensive warranty support program. Additionally, we provide the option of a round-the-clock technical support from both global and local teams. Our teams are available 24/7 to offer prompt assistance, ensuring a seamless and responsive experience for our clients.

A Transformative Approach

As EPCM continues to modernize copper production, the Anode Scrap Wash System is a testament to the company’s dedication to excellence, collaboration, and transformative solutions. This project showcases the fusion of advanced technology, precision engineering, and sustainable practices, paving the way for a brighter future in copper refining.

“Every phase of this project demonstrates our dedication to technical precision and sustainability, paving the way for a more efficient and accountable future in copper production.” Godfrey Harrylal, Project Manager at EPCM.
